Now, she's winning the support of both the NAACP and the KCPD. The baby, born on October 17th, 2011, has been christened Kaelyn. On Thursday, her mother, Melissa Pritchard, visited with a Missouri police officer, she was told the story of Kaelyn's birth changed the way he would treat her and her other children in the future. "I'm still not ready to die," Pritchard said. "I'm still Kaelyn's mother. I'm still that child's mother. I'm still that child's grandma. I'm still that child's aunts and uncles." At the hospital on the day she gave birth to Kaelyn, an ultrasound machine had been used and the baby measured in at only 6 ounces - under 2 pounds - but hospital staff never evaluated him as critically ill. Pritchard, 33, was unaware the baby had suffered from a breathing abnormality until she was in the nursery at Children's Mercy Hospital. "The first time I was holding her, her little heart was in her chest," Pritchard said. "That was when I knew she was sick. That's when I knew I had a problem." Doctors took Kaelyn to the neonatal intensive care unit, and by Wednesday he had died. Medical experts say the autopsy will determine the cause of death. Parents like the Pritchards, who are a white couple, are seeing the 2011 version of 'it takes a village' for their black baby. They are learning their community is not as racially diverse as Kansas City likes to suggest it is. "It's about everyone helping each other," Pritchard said. "That's what this is about - helping each other. If people would look at each other and say 'Hey, that's my sister, my brother, that's my son,' things would change." A message on the city's website stated: "While it is not our goal to ever set racial boundaries, this incident illustrates the myriad of issues that can exist between the races. As a community we are working to grow and evolve, and we are committed to this work." There are about 16 people in Kaelyn's family 648931e174
